Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 100 PhD students, 50 postdoctoral researchers and 26 professors.

Division

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented person for dissecting the molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating neural tumor development. The postdoctoral scholarship position is placed in Prof. Marie Arsenian Henriksson’s Lab and is a collaborative project with Dr. Margareta Wilhelm Lab. Both labs reside in the new Biomedicum building at Karolinska Institutet, in a strong medical research environment with extensive possibilities for interaction and support. More details about the groups can be found at https://ki.se/en/mtc/marie-arsenian-henriksson-group and https://ki.se/en/mtc/margareta-wilhelm-group

Duties

Neuroblastoma is thought to arise from stem or progenitor cells during development. The project is aimed at developing novel neuroblastoma models using patient-derived iPS cells and neural crest cells. The project will involve advanced cell culturing techniques and in vivo modeling to identify at which developmental stage, from stem cell to differentiated cells, driver mutations are activated and induce cellular transformation and tumor development. Single-cell RNA sequencing (Smartseq2 or 10x genomics) will be used to identify changes in cell fate and differentiation potential.

Entry requirements

Candidates should have a strong background in stem cell biology or neural tumor development and demonstrate a promising publication record with at least one first-author peer-reviewed publication. Proficiency in stem cell culture techniques is a requirement. Skills in mouse cancer models and bioinformatics are an advantage. The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communication skills and ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
