The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 250 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

You will be part of a young and enthusiastic group that together will to delineate the roles of sex hormones in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases in order to understand their etiology, in particular in those with evident pathophysiological sex differences. To this end, you will use state-of-the-art neural models (e.g. complex 3D cultures) and infrastructure available at the department (e.g. bioreactors, FACS, and high-end microscopes), and foster multidisciplinary collaborations.

Division
The group of Dr. Ivan Nalvarte at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition conducts research focusing on the nuclear receptors estrogen and liver X receptors (ERs and LXRs) and their role in the function of the human brain. In particular the group focuses on understanding the role of estrogen signaling during neurodevelopment and in neurodegeneration. 

The research team is dynamic and enthusiastic with a well-established collaborative network. The group is located within an environment hosting a broad repertoire of technology.  

Your mission
You are expected to have a strong drive to pursue experimental research with an ambitious and innovative attitude. The project is pursued in collaboration with other researchers. Therefore documented good collaborative skills are necessary.

The main task of the successful candidate will be to study the role of estrogen signaling in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) progression, pathophysiology and how the gathered knowledge from these studies could be translated to clinical recommendations to menopausal women. The candidate will largely work independently utilizing various murine models and in vitro culture of mouse embryonic stem cells and human iPS cells with particular focus on 3D brain organoids. The proposed research is human disease-oriented and should provide significant findings that contribute to a better understanding of the role of hormone signaling in neurodegenerative disorders, specifically in AD. This involves extensive histopathology, animal behaviour testing, surgical techniques, transcriptomic analyses, advanced confocal and light-sheet microscopy. The candidate is expected to analyse, discuss, interpret the data and corroborate with available epidemiological data, as well as to be a driving force in these tasks. Other duties include, managing the mouse colonies, inventory, teaching and supervision of postdoctoral colleagues and PhD, Master’s and internship students in the group, as well as teaching at under- and postgraduate courses Also, the candidate is expected to write high-quality scientific publications and research grant applications.

Qualifications
We are seeking an enthusiastic researcher with several years of experience in estrogen signaling and neuroscience to join the group of Dr. Ivan Nalvarte at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition. The candidate must have documented experience in studying nuclear receptor signaling in the brain, preferably estrogen receptor beta signaling, demonstrating high quality research in international journals. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in molecular biology, biomedicine or equivalent, with documented experience in neuroscience. Experience in working with murine model systems (e.g. learning & memory tests, brain and spinal cord dissections and mouse surgery), molecular biology techniques, immunohistochemistry, 3D brain organoid cultivation, advanced confocal microscopy, FACS and interpreting RNA-sequencing data is of significant merit. It is also of great merit if the applicant has FELASA B or C accreditation. A good ability to communicate in English (written and verbal) is required.

Your profile
A person is eligible to be appointed Researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after the defense of his or her doctoral thesis.

You have good organization capacity and have worked with diverse lab methods, computer platforms, and word processing and statistics software, and you are eager to learn more. You are a team player, you like to communicate, you have sense of responsibility, initiative, capacity to anticipate and solve daily challenges and you would like to contribute to the success of the research team.

Bases os assessment

The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: (1) research expertise, (2) education, (3) leadership, development and collaboration expertise. The applicant must have a solid knowledge on hormone signaling and in using mouse and stem cell models to study neurological disorders. The expertise will be assessed based on curriculum vitae and track record. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
