Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Division
This fulltime position is placed in the Department of Medicine, Huddinge. The department has a strong international profile and a wide range of scopes. The central scientific interest of Professor Christer Betsholtz research group is to understand organ/tissue-specific vascular functions at the molecular and cellular level, with the ultimate goal of understanding how these functions underlie, contributes to, or are affected by, disease processes in ways that can be therapeutically targeted to cure, block or slow progression of disease.

Duties
A senior researcher position is now open for a highly motivated scientist with strong background in research conducted on renal physiology, molecular and cell biology, angiogenesis, and vascular biology. The successful candidate will be responsible for executing leading edge research work, aiming at unraveling deep cellular and molecular characteristics of vascular cells primarily from kidney tissue employing single cell RNA-sequencing, eventually leading to better definition of cell types and their function during physiological as well as pathological circumstances. The position is a permanent position.

The hands-on work includes work with transgenic animal models, the generation, analysis and interpretation of single cell RNA-sequencing data from mouse tissue, as well as tissue analysis employing various histological, immunohistochemical, and biochemical methods. In particular, experience in models of diabetes and fibrosis is a strong merit.

Additionally, the successful candidate is expected to author reports and scientific articles, participate in national and international scientific meetings, apply for funding from research agencies, teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, give departmental seminars and lectures and supervise graduate students, technichians and post-doctoral researchers. Previous grants received in competition are a merit.

The position involves extensive national and international collaborations, as well as collaborations with the pharmaceutical industry, thus, prior experience in such collaborative projects are highly valuable.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Senior Researcher if she or he has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after publicly defended his or her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Senior Researcher. The applicant must have postdoctoral experience from a laboratory/laboratories that is/are internationally recognized.

Bases of assessment
The applicant is expected to hold a PhD, or equivalent, and is expected to be able to show productivity and cooperative skills by shared co-authorship with different research groups. Applicants are expected to have co-authored more than 20 papers and be first and/or corresponding author on a substantial number of papers where the applicant has had a leading role in the writing process. The applicant is expected to have a strong research experience in renal physiology and vascular biology. Expertise in growth factor signaling pathways is a strong merit. Experience in the generation, analysis and interpretation of single cell RNA-sequencing data is a strong merit. The applicant must hold a certificate for animal laboratory work (FELASA C or equivalent) and be highly experienced in working with and maintenance of transgenic mouse lines, including the Cre/loxP system, reporter lines, and metabolic disease models, with emphasis on vascular biology. Solid background knowledge about the Swedish legislation and regulation for experimental animal work is an advantage. Excellent speaking and writing in English is mandatory.

We stress research expertise and experience when assessing the applicants.

Skills and personal qualities
The applicant must speak and write fluent English, and skills in spoken and written Swedish are a merit. The applicant must demonstrate excellent communication and coordination/collaborative skills, documented by successful (inter)national collaborations having presented research findings at international meetings. The applicant must have a strong problem-solving analytical ability as well as being independent and well structured. We stress scientific experience when evaluating applicants and the applicant’s personal skills will be highly valuable.
