The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 research group leaders, of which 24 are full professors, and 65 PhD students.
Teaching represents a fundamental activity at the Department, which participates in several undergraduate courses and postgraduate education programs. Each year approximately 15 students receive their PhD from our Department and many of our graduates have gone onto distinguished careers in the academic or private sector.
We are interested in understanding molecular and synaptic activity of the basal ganglia and how the alterations of these physiological functions are responsible for different neuropathological conditions. To this end, we employ genetic mouse models (i.e. movement disorders, drug addiction and neurodevelopmental disorders) of neuropsychiatric disorders and a variety of cutting-edge technology (i. e. confocal and 2-photon imaging, behavioral analysis, fiber photometry, immunohistochemistry, molecular and cell biology standard technique).
Candidates are expected to build and successfully execute an exciting, independent project within the lab research programs through active discussion and collaboration with the PI.
Candidates are expected to be proficient in patch clamp electrophysiology or multiphoton microscopy and are required to be independent in the design, execution and analysis of the experiments.
We also expect the candidates to be active players within a scientific group with presentations and the involvement in scientific discussion.
This is a fixed-term employment for one year with the possibility of extension.
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent. We especially welcome candidates who hold a Ph.D. or MD (awarded 2015 or later).
Experience with patch clamp electrophysiology, primarily in brain slices, is necessary. Hands-on experience with multiphoton microscopy and brain surgical procedures with viral expression systems are important additional requirements.
The candidates should also be proficient in computer and statistical programming (Matlab/Igor/R) for the development of routines and analysis of imaging and electrophysiology data.
The candidates should be highly organized and ambitious with excellent communication skills in English. Interpersonal skills are essential, and we emphasize the person’s ability as a team player and contributing to a friendly work environment.
