Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The successful applicant will belong to the Integrative Molecular Phenotyping laboratory (http://metabolomics.se) in the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics. The organic synthesis component will be performed with Larodan Lipids, while the bioanalytical and functional studies will be performed at the Karolinska Institute. Larodan has recently relocated to the Karolinska Institute campus and is located in a purpose build laboratory for organic synthesis.

Your mission

We have an opening for an individual wishing to join a multidisciplinary project aimed to understand the role of lipid mediators in disease. The successful candidate will work closely with our collaborator Larodan Lipids to identify and synthesize novel lipid mediators. Focus will be placed upon lipid products of polyunsaturated fatty acids and in particular the octadecanoid pathways. The research scope will include developing and applying novel organic synthetic schemes to produce lipid standards as well as using and further developing mass spectrometry-based methods for quantification of lipid mediators and related molecules. Analyses will also involve the development of novel chromatography approaches including chiral and UPC2 methods for applications in clinical studies as well as experimental models to map the biochemical role of lipid mediators in disease pathobiology. Functional studies will be performed in multiple cell types, in ex vivo lung tissue as well as in animal models to generate a biochemical map of both pro-inflammatory and pro-resolving lipid mediators.

Your profile

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a Ph.D. in organic synthesis, mass spectrometry or bioanalytical chemistry. The successful candidate will be expected to routinely perform organic synthesis as well as employ mass spectrometry-based methods for quantification of lipid mediators. Accordingly, applicants must document their experience in organic synthesis. Previous experience working with lipids is considered a merit as well as experience in small molecule mass spectrometry by LC-MS/MS and cell culture. Excellent communication skills and an ability to interact socially and scientifically with other members of the laboratory and with collaborators in various networks are essential.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

What do we offer?

A creative and inspiring environment full of expertise and curiosity. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote a better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is a state university, which entitles to several benefits such as extended holiday and generous occupational pension. Employees also have access to our modern gym for free and receive reimbursements for medical care.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Location: Solna, Biomedicum
