Karolinska Institutet,

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

Division
The Division of Clinical Microbiology is dedicated to translational research with focus on problems identified in clinical care and on the development of improved diagnostics and therapeutic approaches. The research spans from molecular virology, virus-cell interactions and the understanding of individual viral genes and proteins, to the effects these have on the infected patient. Within bacteriology, the effects of antibiotics on the gut microbiota are studied as well as the interaction between bacteria and protozoes. Medical and dental students are educated in basal and clinical microbiology. In addition, courses in general and molecular microbiology are given for students in biomedical laboratory science, nursing, and dental hygienists as well as in molecular cell biology.

Duties
A postdoctoral scholarship within the field of genetic modification of Human lymphocytes with the final aim of developing a new therapeutic approach against viral hepatitis. This project will be conducted within the Viral Hepatitis Research Group and the pre-GMP core facility at ANA Futura under the supervision of Dr Anna Pasetto, PhD.

The main focus of this post-doctoral position will be to develop and optimize a protocol for genetic modification of Human lymphocytes with viral and non-viral methods utilizing automated GMP-grade and fully closed cell culturing systems. The modified lymphocytes targeting viral hepatitis antigens will then be tested pre-clinically in different mouse models.

Responsibilities: We are seeking a highly motivated early-career scientist with skills and expertise in cell culture and immunology.  Applicants need to demonstrate their experience in running projects independently but also have a strong attitude for cooperation and teamwork. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are needed, as the group and work environment are international.

One or more of the following skills are also required:

  • Experience with cell culture work and processing of blood and tissue samples
  • Experience with immunological methods including functional assays (ELISA, EliSpot)
  • Experience with advanced multicolor flow cytometry acquisition and data analysis
  • Experience with flow cytometry cell sorting, including single-cell sorts
  • Experience with processing cells for RNA sequencing and bioinformatical analysis
  • Experience with quality control and regulatory aspects of products developed in a clean room environment

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
