Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Solna, Cardiovascular Medicine division

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Division
A position as postdoctoral researcher is available at the division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine Solna, working with adipocyte biology, metabolism and cardio-metabolic disease. The division of Cardiovascular Medicine focuses on cardiometabolic research concerning cardiovascular inflammation, atherosclerosis and cellular metabolism. The postdoctoral researcher will work together with Assistant Professor Carolina Hagberg (www.Hagberglab.com) and Professors Rachel Fisher and Per Eriksson in a collaborative approach to study how obesity impacts cardio-metabolic disease. The division includes 55 persons working both in pre-clinical and clinical research thus offering a diverse and stimulating scientific environment. The labs are located in the brand new research building BioClinicum, with close proximity to both the clinics at the Karolinska University Hospital and the research resources of Karolinska Institutet.

Duties
The project aims to characterize how changes in adipocyte metabolism affects the cell’s and tissue’s functionality in health and disease. The project will use a combination of human fat tissue biopsies, specialized culture methods and obese animals as research models to study adipocyte energy metabolism. The postdoc is expected to learn the methods in the lab as well as independently establish new techniques and technology, to coordinate ongoing collaborations both within and outside the team and to instruct students and other scientists in the team. He or she should be able to plan, perform, analyse and document experiments and to communicate the results both within the department and to the greater research community. The duties furthermore include actively taking part in research meetings, handling mouse colonies and tissue biopsies and contributing to the smooth running of the local research environment.

Entry requirements
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and efficient researcher with a PhD in a relevant discipline and experience in genetic, molecular and cellular biology methods. Candidates with previous experience in energy metabolism or adipose tissue biology are especially encouraged to apply. Previous experience in metabolic characterization of research animals and maintaining mouse colonies is a plus. An ambitious, pro-active and problem-solving attitude, as well as a solid theoretical background and good practical experience are highly valued. Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English are a must. The ability to work as a team member and prioritize collaboration and communication with colleagues is also required.

The successful candidate will be offered a scholarship for the postdoctoral training in order to promote internationalization of young researchers.
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
