Karolinska Institutet, Department of Women's and Children's Health

The Department is organized in 10 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Surgery, Neuropediatrics, Pediatric Oncology, Neonatology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Neuropsychiatry (KIND), Reproductive and Perinatal Health. The divisions have separate scientific profiles and vary in size and have several research groups, dealing with both basic and clinical science.

Research group
The Petter Brodin research group located at Science for Life Laboratory in Stockholm and affiliated with the unit of clinical pediatrics, Dept of Women’s and Children’s health, Karolinska Institutet, develops and applies experimental and computational research methods for systems-level analyses of human immune systems. The aim of the group is to understand human immune system variation in health and disease (Brodin & Davis, Nat. Rev Imm 2017) and the regulatory mechanisms underlying such variation and adaptation to environmental influences (Brodin et al, Cell 2015). A particular focus of the group is to understand immune systems development in early life (Olin et al, Cell 2018 & Pou et al, Nature Medicine 2019).

The postdoc project
The current project will be focused on the analysis of longitudinal multiomic data describing different aspects of the blood immune system and its development early in life. Example of such data include mass cytometry analyses of cells, plasma protein profiles (Olink assays), as well as mRNA-sequencing, all using longitudinal samples from newborn children. The aim is to assess specific changes occurring early in life and associate such changes with environmental exposures such as interactions with the microbiome. The main purpose of the project is not technology development but rather a pursuit of novel biological understanding and large datasets have already been acquired.

Skills and personal qualities
The successful candidate should have a PhD in life sciences. Experiences with high-dimensional data analysis is essential. Experience of immunological research is a strong benefit but not an absolute requirement. The ability to work with people of different backgrounds and contribute to a project team is key. Strong proficiency in various types of computational analysis is essential, experience with analysis using R and/or python languages are important given existing pipelines. Experience of multiomics integration strategies is a strong merit and very valuable to the project.

Assessment criteria
A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research
  • Expressed interest in the proposed project
  • Other documented experience relevant to the subject and planned project

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.
