Department of Medicine, Solna, Clinical Epidemiology division

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Division
The Clinical Epidemiology Division is one of the larger divisions at the Department of Medicine, Solna with around 100 employees and 60 affiliated researchers or PhD students. The majority of the researchers are clinically active. At the division there are 8 statisticians employed with an active network for developing and implementing methods in biostatistics. The research group in reproductive epidemiology is a young and rapidly growing group at the Clinical Epidemiology Division. The group incorporates some 25 people including researchers, postdocs and PhD-students. Our research focus on risk factors and interventions during pregnancy, delivery and the neonatal period and outcomes for both mother and child. We have a strong collaboration with clinical departments including obstetrics and gynaecology and paediatrics and other national and international research groups. The group has extensive experience in perinatal outcomes research using advanced methods in biostatistics and clinical epidemiology. Please see Olof Stephansson’s homepage at Karolinska Institutet for more information on our research (http://ki.se/en/people/oloste).

Duties
This position is intended to further strengthen and expand our leading research in the fields of reproductive epidemiology; in particular the statistician will work in close collaboration with senior researchers including prediction studies using machine learning methods. Apart from responsibility for data handling and statistical analysis in observational research projects conducted by the group, the position can be combined with own research or research education.

Entry requirements
The successful applicant should have an MSc or higher degree in biostatistics, statistics or epidemiology with sufficient knowledge in biostatistics and statistical programming to perform advanced data management and statistical analysis using SAS, R or equivalent software based on large-scale register data. We expect the applicant to have several years of work experience with applied biostatistics in epidemiology or similar areas. Experience of working with large databases, such as the Nordic national health or quality of care registers, is essential.
Excellent grasp of spoken and written scientific English is essential, and strong presentation skills are preferable. Swedish skills are meriting, but not essential. In the assessment of the candidates, we place particular emphasis on interpersonal skills. For applicants wishing to combine this position with an independent line of research, a strong track record of the ability to initiate, conduct, and publish successful research projects as lead author in peer-reviewed journals is another requirement.

Application process
The application is to be submitted in Varbi recruitment system.
At Karolinska Institutet a 6-month trial period is required for all permanent appointments.
