Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Vascular Biology

The Vascular Morphogenesis lab at Karolinska Institutet, Biomedicum, Stockholm, Sweden, aims to uncover mechanisms of vascular disease in order to develop and assess new treatment regimes. To this end the lab utilizes animal models in combination with live imaging and single cell transcriptomics.
For the EU-MSCA-ETN project V.A. Cure (Marie Sklodowska Curie Action), the lab invites applications for an Early Stage Researcher (ESR)/PhD position entitled:
Cellular heterogeneity in vascular malformation ‐ identification of novel targets (ESR6)

A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education at the lab of Lars Jakobsson. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

Research group
You will be part of a team of 14 ESRs working on the V.A. Cure project, which aims to uncover core mechanisms of initiation and maintenance of Vascular Anomalies with the final goal to establish novel therapeutic strategies. The project is funded by the EU MSCA-ITN programme.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
You will work on a research project with the following objectives:

  • To identify primary (causative) and secondary effects, of genetic loss of function in the establishment of AVMs, at a transcriptional level and to relate these to the transcriptional profile of Vascular and lymphatic malformation.
  • Use the above information to propose new targeting strategies.
  • To test targeting strategies in in vitro systems with a cellular functional readout.
  • To validate therapeutic potential in mouse models of HHT1.

You will also take part in the international training programme and in outreach events

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

We are looking for a motivated student with a strong commitment to basic and/or translational research, who:

  • is eligible for MSCA-ETN funding, see http://www.vacure.eu
  • has a MSc degree in biology, biomedical sciences or related disciplines
  • is a team player with good communication skills

The successful candidate will receive a salary starting at approximately 2 650 €/month for four years, with additional mobility allowance of approximately 400€/month, if you have a family, an allowance of approximately 340€/month for the first three years.
The period of employment is 4 years. Starting date: June – October 2019.

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English or with a translation into English)
  • Two letters of recommendation or the contact information for at least 2 referees.

Deadline for submitting applications: 1 May 2019

Selection
A selection will be made among eligible applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from doctoral education. The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.

KI uses the following bases of assessment:

  • Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research
  • Analytical skill
  • Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject.

Terms and conditions
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time. All applicants will be informed when the recruitment is completed.
