Division
The Department of Clinical neuroscience and the research team of Pete Williams offers an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant in the field of translational neurobiology. The current project goal is to elucidate the early molecular mechanisms of glaucoma, a common neurodegeneration affecting ~80 million patients worldwide. The overall goal of the Pete Williams Lab is to develop clinically translatable neuroprotective strategies for glaucoma focusing on neuronal metabolic and mitochondrial health.

Current, ongoing projects are investigating how age and elevated intraocular pressure (both major risk factors for glaucoma) intersect to drive neuronal mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal metabolic decline in glaucoma using animal (mouse and rat), tissue, and cell culture models. Initially, the work is focusing on strategies to reduce retinal ganglion cell vulnerability in glaucoma by targeting neuronal NAD-levels. This is achieved by using genetic, molecular, neurobiological, viral gene therapy, and electrophysiological techniques. By identifying key molecules and mechanisms that render retinal ganglion cells vulnerable in glaucoma, the project will contribute to the development of new diagnostic biomarkers and clinically translatable therapeutics.

The Pete Williams Lab is situated at St Erik Eye Hospital, Kungsholmen, Stockholm, and the hired applicant will have the chance to interact and work in an international environment with multidisciplinary basic research scientists, clinicians, and research clinicians.

Duties
Daily duties include, but may not be limited to:

  • Colony management (mouse and rat) and drug treatment regimes
  • Assistance with surgical procedures; rodent ophthalmological clinical exams
  • Cell and tissue culture
  • Molecular biology techniques such as immunofluorescence, Western blotting, qPCR, genotyping/PCR
  • Microscopy and image analysis

Entry requirements
We are looking for an ambitious research assistant with enthusiasm towards bettering human health through basic and translatable neurobiology. The successful candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree with a strong background in either neuroscience, ophthalmology/visual sciences, biomedical sciences, or molecular biology and wet-lab experience. A Master’s degree or additional wet-lab knowledge would be highly advantageous.

Previous practical experience with rodent husbandry, molecular biology techniques, basic neuroscience techniques, and/or microscopy techniques are considerable substantial merits.

Good English skills are a requirement.

Application process
The application is to be submitted in Varbi recruitment system.
