Karolinska Institutet, The Department of Medicine, Huddinge

Division
The Department of Medicine at Huddinge comprises seven units, three research centers and, around 70 independent research groups. The Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM) is a research unit within the Department of Medicine Huddinge with a focus on to bring together basic and clinical competences to pursue cutting-edge research improving the understanding of mechanisms involved in normal and malignant hematopoiesis (https://ki.se/en/medh/center-for-hematology-and-regenerative-medicine). The ultimate goal is to translate novel scientific findings into the clinic, thereby improving patient outcome.

Description of research group and projects We are looking for highly motivated and talented postdoctoral candidates to take the lead on exciting research projects in the lab of Assistant Professor Julian Walfridsson (https://ki.se/en/medh/julian-walfridsson-group).

The Walfridsson lab is a collaborative team combining disciplines, resources, expertise, and techniques not only to increase the understanding of disease mechanisms but also to identify cancer-specific therapeutic targets and drugs to facilitate the development of new treatment strategies for leukemia. The projects therefore involve a multi-disciplinary, "bench-to-bedside" approach and various cross-functional collaborations (e.g., between national and international researchers, pharmaceutical companies and clinicians), in which the recruited postdoc will benefit from interactions in this highly collaborative network.

The recruited postdoc will be supported by active coaching and mentoring to facilitate the next career path. As some of the projects involve close collaboration with pharmaceutical companies, the career building activities might also be focused on a continued profession in the industry.

Duties
As a member of the research team, you will use a wide variety of techniques such as functional tools (e.g. CRISPR-Cas9), next generation sequencing analysis (RNA/DNA-seq), drug safety and efficacy studies on cell lines, various primary normal cells, patient material and mouse models, to identify and characterize novel targets and drugs for leukemia. The recruited postdoc will lead the work and independently perform experiments and data analysis. The projects include collaborations with other members of the lab and external academic as well as industrial partners and therefore the applicant must enjoy team work and to interact with other researchers.

Essential requirements

  • PhD degree or equivalent scientific competence.
  • Good understanding of molecular biology and cell biology.
  • Good proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to independently organize, plan, perform and analyze experimental work.
  • Experience in cultivating mammalian cells.

Meriting Experience

  • Experience with mouse work (FELASA B or C certificate).
  • Experience with flow cytometry.
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing analysis (e.g. RNA/DNA/ChIP-seq) and bioinformatics analysis of such data.
  • Experience with drug discovery research (e.g. efficacy studies, toxicity studies, proliferation assays, etc.).

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A maximum one page cover letter summarizing previous experience, research interest and motivation for position
  3. A complete list of publications
  4. Names and contact details of three references who are familiar with the applicant’s recent research and training

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
