Karolinska Institutet, Department of Biosciences and Nutrition

The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Description of project and work
The work will be performed in the research group of Professor Martin BERGÖ (MBE) https://ki.se/en/bionut/caax-proteins-martin-bergo. We study basic mechanisms of disease pathogenesis and explore new therapeutic targets in cancer, accelerated aging, inflammation, and heart disease. The candidate for this position will define the importance of a potential new tumor suppressor in lymphoma development and explore the role of free radicals and antioxidant supplementation in lymphoma and leukemia progression. To approach these issues, we will use genetically modified and somatically gene-targeted mice, cell culture techniques, genomics, imaging, and translational approaches. The successful applicant will lead independent studies into these research areas and we will provide opportunities for the candidate to develop into independent researcher. Moreover, the applicant will be encouraged to apply for competitive national and international postdoctoral fellowship and career grants, and will receive support in those endeavors.

Expectations
You will be supervised by Prof. Martin Bergö and work alongside and collaborate with a senior lab manager, an animal technician, and other postdocs and PhD and master-level students in the group. You will work on your own projects and present your data at lab meetings and national and international conferences; and you will contribute to the overall maintenance of the laboratory and the collaborative spirit of the group.

Qualifications
The applicant should hold a PhD in a related area and have extensive experience in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or bioinformatics. Specifically, the applicant should have experience with analyses of oxidative stress in models of lymphoma, including myc-transgenic mice. The applicant should be able to design and conduct projects independently but should also be able to work in collaborative settings. You should possess excellent communication skills and be able to speak and write very well in English.
