The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.
Unit
Research at the unit of Biochemical Toxicology aims to understand the connections between exposure to chemicals and carcinogenesis. The position is placed in this unit, in the research group of Kristian Dreij at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, IMM. Dreij’s lab studies the biological consequences of transcriptional errors with the aim to understand how misincorporation during transcription affects the expressed protein and downstream processes involved in development of diseases such as cancer.
Duties
Although the concept of transcriptional errors is well known, the biological consequences are still under investigation. The project will determine the frequency, types and effects of transcription errors in different mammalian models of cancer development. The post doc will primarily use molecular and cellular methodologies together with highly accurate RNAseq protocols. Sequencing will be performed in collaboration with Dr. Pelechano’s group at SciLife Lab at KI.
The post doc will mainly perform laboratory-based work as well as analyze data, interpret and present the results, and write scientific articles. This project is conceptually novel and expected to have important consequences on our understanding of transcriptional fidelity and cancer development.
Qualifications
The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. from an appropriate discipline such as cell- or molecular biology with in-depth understanding of transcription, DNA damage, cellular signaling and carcinogenesis.
A strong background in standard cell and molecular biology techniques for studying gene and protein expression are required. Proven experience in culturing and studying multicellular spheroids is a substantial merit. Basic or advanced understanding of bioinformatics/computational biology is considered as an asset.
We are searching for a highly motivated postdoc who can work independently and develop his/her own ideas and visions. Candidates should be creative, and have strong communication skills. The ability to express oneself in speech and writing in English at a high level and interact effectively and work productively in a team will be considered important. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.
A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.
The position is available for 2 years with possible extension, from spring 2018.
