Postdoctoral studies in CD8+ T cell biology (scholarship)

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are looking for an ambitious postdoctoral fellow with a solid virus-specific T cell biology background to join our highly accomplished team. We offer a stimulating environment in a rapidly moving research frontier. The successful candidate will be part of a cluster of other researchers working on similar topics.

Division

The Buggert group conducts innovative studies on cell-mediated immunity in health and viral diseases. These studies are translational in nature and utilize unique patient-derived material to develop ex vivo, in vitro, and organoid models for investigating the interactions between viral infections and T cells. To conduct these studies, we employ cutting-edge bulk and single-cell technologies, including high-parameter flow cytometry, gene editing, antigen-specific assays, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, TCR-seq, and proteomics analyses, to dissect the heterogeneity and function of memory T cell immunity. Through these platforms, we study various aspects of human memory T cell biology with an overall aim to improve current immunological therapies for diseases.

Duties

The postdoctoral candidate will focus on establishing novel acute and chronic viral disease organoid models to mechanistically investigate the unique functions of CD8+ T cells in controlling viral infections. The candidate will collaborate closely with various group members to develop these models, integrate epigenetic and functional assays into organoid cultures, and apply gene-editing technologies (e.g., CRISPR-Cas9) to explore how CD8+ T cells adapt their functions to mediate viral control in tissues. As such, we are seeking a postdoctoral candidate with a PhD, who will work as an integrated member of our team.

Entry requirements

Postdoctoral scholarships may be established for foreign researchers who pursue their merit in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

To be considered for employment as a postdoctoral scholar, in addition to holding a PhD in the field of biomedicine, the candidate must have demonstrated research expertise and documented research experience in the field of human cytotoxic lymphocytes.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has:
- Been trained in immunology during their PhD studies
- Publications in the field of antiviral T cell immunity
- Statistical knowledge
- Generate high-parameter flow cytometry data
- Development of virus disease models
- Fluency in English

It is meritorious that the applicant has
- Laboratory molecular and cell biology skill sets (e.g. preparation of RNAseq libraries)

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to the positive development of the activities at KI. We put great emphasis on personal suitability for this role.

Location: Flemingsberg

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
