KI, Department of NVS, Division of Clinical geriatrics

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Clinical Geriatric, with over 100 employed and affiliated researchers are located both in Neo, Campus Flemingsberg and in the Q-building in Solna. We conduct research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. Our research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The division has a close cooperation with the Medical Unit Aging within Theme Inflammation and Aging at Karolinska University Hospital.

Novel molecular imaging technology with PET enables us to detect and map pathological changes in the brain in Alzheimer´s disease and other  dementia diseases long before symptoms of memory problems occur. Our studies aim to develop new tracer molecules for PET that could clinically differentiate the various dementia diseases in their early stages, and to evaluate the therapeutic effect of innovative treatment strategies.

Research group

The Translational Molecular Imaging Lab, led by professor Agneta Nordberg, has a strong translational approach for characterizing the complex pathophysiological features of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative proteinopathies, with the use of in vivo molecular and in vitro brain imaging techniques. We aim to develop new diagnostic markers and drug targets for early intervention during the disease process of neurodegenerative disorders. The lab is located in the Neo building at KI Campus Flemingsberg close to the Karolinska University Hospital, Theme Aging, the Aging Brain.

Your mission

We are looking for one to two talented and highly motivated postdoctoral researchers with an interest to work with multi-tracer in vivo PET study, measuring  different pathological markers including beta amyloid and tau deposition, astrogliosis, synapse function and impairment, combined with cognitive tests, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma  biomarkers and MRI. We expect the applicant to take an active role in applying advanced imaging methods for processing and evaluating PET, MRI imaging data, performing statistical analyses, and preparing scientific manuscripts under supervision. The group provides excellent training opportunities in an international working environment, national and international collaborations, and possibilities to publish articles in high-impact journals.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The candidate should have obtained a PhD degree in medicine, neuroscience, psycholoyy or a related field. We seek a person with hand-on experience in neuroimaging and good statistical knowledge. Social and collaborative skills are very important since the applicant will be working with other members of the research team and collaborators. Fluency in both written and spoken English is a requirement.

Meritorious:

  • Documented experience within Alzheimer’s disease or other neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Documented experience with software for neuroimaging data processing (i.e., SPM, Freesurfer, FSL) and statistical analyses (i.e., SPSS, R).
  • Documented experience of analyzing clinical data.
  • Documented scripting experience (i.e., Matlab, R).

This is a fixed-term contract for up to two years.
