Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at ki.se/meb

Division
We seek up to four postdoctoral researchers who will contribute to the unit of cardiorenal epidemiology led by Prof Juan Jesus Carrero (https://staff.ki.se/people/juan-jesus-carrero). The main goal of research activities in his team is to improve our understanding on the use and effect of medications and devices in routine care settings, with a primary focus on kidney diseases, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

Duties
We seek dedicated and creative postdoctoral researchers to join our team. You will be involved in studies exploring the conditions of use (adherence, compliance, off and on-label use) and the effect (effectiveness, safety) of a number of licensed drugs and devices in 'real world' (routine practice) conditions. You will study unique data sources, including several Swedish Quality Registers and the Stockholm CREAtinine Measurements (SCREAM) project, a longitudinal administrative healthcare utilization cohort of >3 million residents of Stockholm with complete information on undertaken laboratory measurements. We employ both classic and advanced statistical methods, within the target trial emulation framework and with particular emphasis on causal inference statistics.

As a Postdoctoral Data Scientist you will develop analysis plans, protocols, ethical submissions, and funding application submissions as required for ongoing and future studies. You will generate and analyse large data assets, adapt existing and develop new research methodologies and materials. You will be part in a multidisciplinary team and carry out collaborative research projects with colleagues at Karolinska Institutet and in partner institutions. You will report research findings in the form of conference abstracts at national and international conferences and scientific publications.

Entry requirements
The ideal candidate should hold a Doctoral (or be near completion) degree in medicine, statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, pharmacology, pharmacy, health data sciences or a related field. Demonstrable advanced skills and expertise in R programming, STATA, or similar languages and ability to collaborate well within multi-disciplinary teams and independently are essential. Experience in propensity score/s, instrumental variable/s, and/or other methods to adjust for confounding for indication in pharmaco-epidemiological studies, experience in prediction modelling and good track record of peer reviewed scientific publications are desirable. The candidate needs good skills in English, both written and spoken.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna, Sweden

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  • A reference letter
