Diabetes affects nearly 10% of the global population, with a 50% increase in incidence over the past decade. Chronic complications, including coronary heart disease, retinopathy, nephropathy, and impaired wound healing, are major treatment challenges for patients with diabetes.
Growth and Metabolism laboratory, lead by Sergiu Catrina, investigates new pathogenic mechanisms of the chronic complications of diabetes. The major focuses are how diabetes affects hypoxia, Notch and other signaling pathways and how this contributes to the development of diabetes complications. We use clinical samples together with animal and cellular models of diabetes as well as genetically-modified mice to conduct mechanistical, translational, and clinical research.

The lab belongs to the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery, Karolinska Institutet, and is located in BioClinicum, Karolinska University Hospital Solna. BioClinicum is a hub for preclinical and clinical research with almost 100 research groups in the building.
The present project will span from molecular and cellular biology to translational studies using cellular and animal models as well as clinical samples. The candidate will use various methods to detect RNA and protein expression, such as QPCR, western blotting, flow cytometry, ELISA, immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy. Cellular proliferation, migration, Seahorse metabolic flux assay, Electro Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements of ROS, plasmid or siRNA/miRNA transfection will also be performed.
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Location: Solna
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
