We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated post-doctoral research fellow in chemical biology, to join an open science international project in reproductive biology supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Structural Genomics Consortium (https://www.thesgc.org/). Our role is to characterize human proteins linked to fertility and infertility, using a combination of biochemistry, cell biology and medicinal chemistry. A, highly motivated and skilled experienced post-doctoral research fellow in chemical biology is needed to join our research team in the SGC Women’s and children’s health initiative at the SGC Karolinska site (https://www.thesgc.org/news/structural-genomics-consortium-receives-grant-womenâs-health-discovery). Your role will be to explore and characterize selected proteins as potential targets for new, safe, and effective non-hormonal contraceptive agents, with the broader goal of empowering women to make informed choices about family planning. Specifically, the initiative will generate Target Enabling Packages (TEPs), containing e.g. high-quality protein reagents, assays, and chemical probes to facilitate future research and drug discovery for a portfolio of proteins that are potential drug targets for new contraceptives.
This project is a collaboration between the Karolinska Institutet, University College London, Goethe University Frankfurt, University of North Carolina, McGill University and University of Toronto and other international partners, with funding from the Structural Genomics Consortium and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Each partner university will recruit a post-doctoral research fellow, with complementing skills creating a strong multidisciplinary international team to collectively work on this initiative. The SGC team based at Karolinska Institutet currently has funding for around 20 staff members and is expected to grow as additional funding becomes available. Overall SGC has activities e.g., in structural and chemical biology, antibody production and characterization as well as functional studies of human proteins in disease-relevant assays.
You have a PhD degree in chemical biology, biochemistry, cell- and molecular biology or other relevant area and a passion for practical laboratory work. You are a flexible problem solver who likes to work independently with production, analysis and reporting of data to the project team. Experience from designing and running biochemical assays and characterization of proteins is a requirement, and you are familiar with state-of-the-art technologies and instrumentation to perform such tasks. Experience from protein production and structural biology are merits. Furthermore, you need to communicate well in English, be well-structured and take responsibility to produce well-documented high-quality scientific data.
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups.
The Department of Medicine Solna is since March 2015 one of the partners of the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC, www.thesgc.org) and its Innovative Medicines Initiative (EU) projects which in part focus on the discovery and evaluation of novel targets in inflammatory diseases (ULTRA-DD 2015-2020 and EUbOPEN 2020-2025, www.eubopen.org). The position is placed within the SGC-KI research team headed by Michael Sundström (Scientific Director), organized within the group of Professor Per-Johan Jakobsson, Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine,Solna Karolinska Institutet. Part of the work will also be carried out at the Science for Life Laboratory Stockholm.
