The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including aging, Alzheimer, biomaterial, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, bioorganic chemistry, immunology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 250 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in Neo at Campus Flemingsberg, a biomedical research building, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Your mission

We have developed the first biomimetic spinning method for production of artificial spider silk fibers. We are now studying recombinant spider silk proteins by biochemical and biophysical methods, and are developing scaffolds for tissue engineering. The research group of Anna Rising currently consists of two PhD students, three technicians, one researcher and three post docs. The research group is located at Karolinska Institutet, campus Flemingsberg, and at SLU in Uppsala.

The successful candidate is expected to share responsibility of the organization of the lab (including documentation of chemicals in KLARA, and writing risk assessments, introduce new staff to safe lab routines) and independently do routine work in recombinant protein production, purification and characterization. Isolation of DNA and RNA and spider dissections and handling of tissues will also be part of the duties, as well as waste management.

The applicant is expected to supervise lab work and practically assist doctoral and master students. We work in collaboration with other groups and very interdisciplinary, which demands the applicant to be independent, have a positive attitude and be collaborative. The applicant is expected to work at both KI campuses as well as in Uppsala.

Your profile

The applicant should have a bachelor degree in biomedicine, biochemistry, cell biology, chemistry, or similar topic, and/or long-standing experience of experimental protein biochemistry work. A PhD in a relevant subject is meritorious.

The successful candidate is expected to have a large interest in protein biochemistry and have documented experience in the techniques commonly used in the lab (e.g. cloning, western blots, SDS PAGE, and spectroscopic methods).

Previous documented experience of prokaryotic and eukaryotic protein expression and purification of aggregation prone proteins, spider dissection, single cell dissociation of silk glands, and handling of eukaryotic cells cultures in 3D and analysis of these is required. Previous experience of work with primary cells and stem cells are meritous.

Proficiency in speaking and writing English is a requirement. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
