Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

Do you want to lead the scientific work for a team of postdoctoral scientists and technical staff in translational medical research? This is an opportunity to work in an international research environment on open science at SGC-KI. We are looking for a post holder to further develop an ambitious research plan and lead the scientific work of the group.

Your mission

We are seeking one dedicated scientist, who will be based at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM), employed by the Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institutet. The post holder should have proven scientific excellence, such as publications, supervision and independent funding. As the EUbOPEN project is highly interdisciplinary, it is very important that the post holder is well-structured and takes responsibility to produce well documented and clearly communicated high quality scientific data. The EUbOPEN project focuses on pre-competitive target evaluation studies, including deep molecular, genetic and cellular characterization of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), liver fibrosis (LF) and neuroinflammation. The closest collaborative network at KI includes Pekka Katajisto and Eduardo Villablanca (IBD), Volker Lauschke (LF) and Maja Jagodic (neuroinflammation), as well as technology platforms (omics) at Science for Life Laboratory (www.scilifelab.org).

The successful candidate will lead the scientific work for a team of postdoctoral scientists and technical staff which are based at SGC-KI and in our collaborator’s laboratories. Our expectation is that the post holder will be able to further develop an ambitious but realistic research plan, lead the scientific work of the group and interact efficiently with our collaborators. Further, our expectation is that the post holder will be successful in obtaining additional funding from e.g. research councils, in addition to the core funding provided by the EUbOPEN grant and publish the work in well-respected scientific journals.

The post holder will report to Michael Sundström, with responsibility to develop patient derived cell assays, e.g. patient based organoids, complex co-culture systems and biomimetic material assisted cell cultures. Such cell systems/assays will be used for functional studies, including screening of chemical probes and deep patient characterization (omics). Human materials from patients and controls are obtained in close collaboration with local hospitals and clinics. Scientific advice will be provided by the SGC-KI team and our collaborators, as well as from the broader SGC network of partners, including major pharmaceutical companies.

Project

The EUbOPEN project is a large-scale collaborative project between the Karolinska Institutet, University of Oxford (UK), Goethe University of Frankfurt and other partners in EU, the UK and globally, with funding from the European Union and pharmaceutical company partners. EUbOPEN is conducted as an integrated project with the Structural Genomics Consortium. The EUbOPEN organization based at Karolinska Institutet comprises funding for around 20 staff members, and is expected to grow as additional funding becomes available. Overall, EUbOPEN has activities e.g. in structural and chemical biology, antibody production and characterization as well as functional studies of human proteins in disease relevant assays.

Your profile

Required: PhD and post-doctoral experience in biomedicine, biology, chemical biology or other relevant research area(s), with special focus on patient-derived cell assays/systems, preferably in inflammatory and/or fibrotic diseases. Further, documented excellence in tissue-based studies by use of IPSCs and organoids will be considered a distinct merit. We further expect the candidate to have excellent experiences in translational medical research by use of e.g. cellular immunology techniques, ELISA based techniques, multicolor flow cytometry of human immune cells, immunohistochemistry of human mucosal tissue and molecular biology techniques. Finally, the successful candidate should have some experiences in supervision of students or other staff members.

Desirable: Experience in coordinating access to clinical samples, including writing ethical applications for human studies.

A person is eligible to be appointed Researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after the defense of his or her doctoral thesis.

We stress research expertise when assessing applicants.

What do we offer?

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct innovative medical research and provide the largest range of biomedical education in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is a state university, which entitles employees to several benefits such as extended holiday and a generous occupational pension. Employees also have free access to our modern gym and receive reimbursements for medical care.

Location

The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The Department of Medicine is since March 2015 one of the partners of the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC, www.thesgc.org) and its Innovative Medicines Initiative (EU) projects which in part focus on the discovery and evaluation of novel targets in inflammatory diseases (ULTRA-DD 2015-2020 and EUbOPEN 2020-2025, www.eubopen.org). The position is placed within the SGC-KI research team headed by Michael Sundström (Scientific Director), organized within the group of Professor Per-Johan Jakobsson, Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Solna.
