Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

The laboratory of Professor Thomas Helleday and Deputy group leader Dr. Ulrika Warpman Berglund provides an excellent translational and scientific environment, performing oncology drug discovery from bench to bedside. The multidisciplinary research group is located at Science for Life Laboratory and consists of PhD students, postdocs and senior scientists within biology, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacology, many with experience from the pharmaceutical industry.

We recently started a collaboration with Dr. Michael Sundström and his research team at CMM, which is an integral part of the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC). SGC is a large collaborative network between major SGC academic hubs, including Karolinska Institutet, University of Oxford (UK), and Goethe University Frankfurt (DE), and the pharmaceutical industry, supported by EU funding from the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI). The overall goal of the recently approved IMI2 project EUbOPEN is to generate potent, well characterized, small-molecule modulators of human proteins, laying the foundation for identifying a set of openly accessible tool compounds targeting the entire druggable human genome (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery 18, 733-736 (2019), doi: 10.1038/d41573-019-00159-9). Our expectation is that, with this set of chemical tools available, scientists will be poised to interrogate the latest findings emerging from big data approaches and human genetic studies, thus shortening the time from gene discovery to target prioritization, and ultimately to patient benefits.

The group at Helleday lab working in EubOPEN project will be responsible for generating a chemogenomic library, annotate the library and profile the compounds targeting GPCRs, glycosylases Nudix proteins and other target families.

Your mission

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to drive the annotation of the library and participate in compilation of the chemogenomic library as well as profiling of its compounds. The position holder will be involved in the logistics of handling compounds between the SGC nodes, perform in silico analysis, computational chemistry, literature searches for compound selection and actively participate in assay development and optimisation. All laboratory activities must be clearly documented in Karolinska Institutets electronic laboratory notebook system. Results must be entered in the project central database system. The candidate will work in close contact with and report to the deputy group leader Dr. Ulrika Warpman Berglund and ultimately to Dr. Michael Sundström, Scientific Director at the SGC and EUbOPEN in order to timely meet pre-defined research deliverables and milestones.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The successful candidate should hold a PhD degree in medicinal chemistry or biochemistry and be familiar with state-of-the-art preclinical drug discovery principles and methodologies, including assay development and validation. The applicant should have prior experience in working on glycosylases and Nudix proteins and performed computational chemistry tasks such as structure-based design, virtual screening and molecular dynamics simulations. Hands-on experience with the Schrödinger molecular modelling suite is strongly meriting. We are looking for a bright, ambitious and highly motivated researcher who can work well in a team, in a multidisciplinary and highly international and ethnically diverse laboratory.

The applicant should have good social and analytical skills and be able to organise and prioritise research within the project timetable. The applicant should have excellent written and oral communication skills and be fluent in English, written and spoken.

Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
