To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

In this project a student will undertake his/her PhD studies in Gerald McInerney’s research group at the Dept of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology, situated in the Biomedicum building. Biomedicum is an advanced research environment that promotes interdisciplinary cooperation and research. The GM group consists of the PI, three postdocs, two PhD Students and a number of short-term MSc students. We study the cellular responses to infection with RNA viruses. The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The project aims at unravelling the changes in the interaction states of the proteome of cells during the early hours of virus infection and in cells under certain stress responses. We are using innovative mass-spectrometry based techniques to get a comprehensive picture of the events that occur early in infection with RNA viruses. In the project, the student will also utilize well established methods such as recombinant DNA technology, protein biochemistry and confocal microscopy to validate interesting findings from the mass-spectrometry experiments.

The project is part of a collaboration with Pär Nordlund’s lab at Bioclinicum, directly opposite Biomedicum across Solnavägen. We will hold regular joint group meetings to discuss the projects, ensuring a free flow of ideas and expertise between the ‘wet’ lab and computational arms of the collaboration.

A) General eligibility requirement
You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Skills and personal qualities

The applicant shall be a highly motivated person with an interest in virology and cell biology. The applicant shall have documented experience with one or several of the following disciplines, virology, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, proteomics and computational biology.

The most important personal characteristics are curiosity, commitment and social skills. The candidate should be self-motivating and show the abilities to work with others, to think flexibly and coordinate projects. The working language of the group is English, so excellent knowledge of English, both spoken and written is essential.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
