Karolinska Institutet,

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Division
This project resides in the unit of Experimental Asthma and Allergy Research. The project will involve an opportunity to practice research in a translational setting, with the aim to define mechanisms for asthma that can be used as targets for treatments.

Project
The main project is to design, plan and carry out physiological experiments on mice and guinea pigs to examine lung function in asthma and allergy models. The aim is to establish and explore relevant models for deciphering mechanistic features with relevance to asthma. One part of this is to perform laboratory analyses such as lung function, histological examinations, flow cytometry, molecular biology and measurements of inflammatory mediators.

Entry requirements
We are looking for an applicant must have strong interest in asthma and other lung diseases and have experience of experimental animal models. It is a requirement that the applicant has the formal authority of Function A or equivalent (Felasa C) for animal experiments. Practice with ELISA, PCR, flow cytometry and histology is preferable. You should like to learn new methods and know that accuracy and a structured approach is essential for the success of the trials. Important qualifications are excellent communication skills and ability to interact socially and scientifically with other post docs and students, experiences of working in project form, experience as a scientific coordinator, good computer skills (especially Excel, Word and statistical programs) as well as fluency in English as the research environment is international. Those who have fur allergies or illnesses that may be aggravated by daily exposure to laboratory animals are not advised to seek this position. We stress research expertise and interest in collaborative science when assessing applicants.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
