Division
The research group of Dr. Magdalena Paolino is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position with scholarship for 2 years, with possible extension. The Paolino laboratory is interested in in uncovering the molecular basis of disease, particularly focusing on immunity, cancer and metabolism (Paolino et al. Nature 2014, Suriben et al. Cell 2015, Paolino et al. J. Immunol 2011). The lab focuses, but not exclusively, on exploring novel physiological roles for ubiquitin-related genes.  The research goes from mouse genetics to therapy, and strives to have important implications for human health and disease treatment. More information about the lab is available at: https://ki.se/en/meds/team-magdalena-paolino. Our team is part of the Department of Medicine Solna (MedS) as is located at the newly built Bioclinicum at the Karolinska Institutet.

Duties
We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate with strong competence in functional in vivo animal genetics and disease modeling as well as knowledge of experimental applications of molecular and cellular biology techniques. The applicant will apply state-of-the-art approaches to explore the function and mechanims of previously uncharacterized genes in cancer, metabolism and/or immunity. For these tasks, he/she will combine mouse genetics and in vivo disease models with a wide range of cell biological, molecular and immunological experimental methods, such as flow cytometry analysis, CRISPR/Cas9, shRNAs, microscopy, next generation sequencing and cell culture models including 3D organoids. Funding for the position is secured, but the successful candidate will be encouraged to apply for fellowships.

Entry requirements
The applicant is eligible to apply if he or she has obtained a PhD in Cancer biology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related fields.
Candidates are expected to have demonstrated experience working with disease mouse models and experimental application of molecular and cellular biology techniques with a deep knowledge in immunology, cancer and/or metabolic research. The ideal candidate should be creative and goal-oriented, with a proven scientific track record, and thrive in an interdisciplinary and international environment.
The applicant is expected to work in a diligent way to take responsibility in generating properly controlled scientific data of high quality. The candidates should be able to work independently and taking a strong lead in managing the project. Good interpersonal and communication skills in English, spoken and written, are required. Personal suitability for the group will also be a strong selection criterion.
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English:

  • Letter of motivation with summary of previous experience and research interests (about one page)
  • Curriculum vitae and qualifications, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position and academic distinctions
  • A complete list of publications
  • Contact details of three references.

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
