Karolinska Institutet, the department of Medicine, Huddinge

Division
The Department of Medicine at Huddinge consists of seven units. Advanced preclinical, clinical and epidemiological research is conducted within internal medicine and infection. The division is also involved in education, with respect to metabolic disease, biochemistry, hematology and biomedical laboratory science.

Description of the research group and project
An elevated cholesterol level in blood is one major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Our research aims to understand how blood cholesterol is regulated in man by hormones and by components in our diet and by inherited factors. How this regulation takes place is one key line of the research group. (https://ki.se/en/medh/bo-angelin-mats-rudling-group). The research is focused to understand the mechanisms behind conditions and such as atherosclerosis, dyslipidemia, aging, metabolic syndrome and dietary restriction. Work is conducted in both preclinical and clinical research. The research projects aim to understand the molecular regulation of lipoprotein, lipid, bile acid and carbohydrate metabolism to understand the mechanisms for the links between metabolic and cardiovascular disease.

Duties
We are to include a researcher to work in our group led by Professors Mats Rudling and Bo Angelin. The researcher will serve as project leader, have the responsibility for coordination of ongoing current projects of the group, and will actively apply for grants, author scientific manuscripts, and present research results nationally and internationally. Teaching may also be included in the duties, as well as supervision of PhD-students.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed researcher if they have been awarded a Degree of Doctor or have achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The person appointed should have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than nine years before the last day of the application period.

It is highly desirable that the applicant has a good track record regarding research in nutrition and/or lipid metabolism and has a structured and independent approach, accuracy and high analytical skills. The applicant should also have good competence in lipoprotein and bile acid analyses, analysis of gene regulation/e.g. RNA-extraction, cDNA synthesis, qPCR, siRNA), and of protein e.g. Western blot, immunoprecipitation, ELISA, RIA, enzymatic activity assays). Strong documented experience in animal experiments performing functional tests in mice and rats is a merit (e.g. oral glucose tolerance tests and insulin tolerance tests, subcutaneous/intraperitoneal injection, operative installation of mini-pumps, collection of bile, etc.).

Very good knowledge in English, written and spoken, is a requirement. Since the position includes writing of ethical applications, knowledge of the Swedish rules regulating human and animal research is needed.

Bases of assessment
We emphasize strong and appropriate broad analytical skills, experience of supervision and tutoring of students at different levels including PhD-students, and scientific expertise when assessing applicants. Experience of national and international collaboration is a merit.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work.
  2. Cover letter, including a summary of the Ph.D. studies (no more than two pages).
  3. A complete list of publications.
  4. A summary of current work (no more than one page).
  5. Qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).
  6. Names and contact details of three references who are familiar with the applicants recent research and training.

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
