Karolinska Institutet, NVS

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division
Karolinska Institutet Center for Alzheimer Research and the Division of Neurogeriatrics perform research on different aspects of Alzheimer’s disease from molecules to patients. Our research group (PI: Maria Ankarcrona) investigates the cellular mechanisms underlying mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal cell death in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. The group works in an inspiring and interactive research environment at BioClinicum, Campus Nord/Solna and has on-going collaborative projects with national and international research groups.
We now want to expand the group with a one year postdoctoral postition with possibility of extension.

Duties
The postdoctoral position will include involvement in a project regarding mitochondrial functions and Endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondria interplay in neurodegenerative disorders focusing on pathways regulating mitochondrial functions and cellular bioenergetics. The postdoc will be involved in all parts of the project ranging from planning and performing experimental work to project and data management, and dissemination of results.

Entry requirements
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Medical Sciences or Health Sciences. The candidate is expected to have a background in neurobiology and neurodegeneration with good knowledge of the nervous system, bioenergetics and mitochondria. The candidate should also have experience with biochemical and cell biological methods detecting mitochondrial functions, dynamics as well as primary neuronal cultures and animal work. That includes previous knowledge on live and fixed confocal imaging and electron microscopy, protein and gene expression analysis, cellular respirometry assays or equivalent. Proven interest on exploring targets for therapeutic intervention will be highly recommended. Applicants must be able to work independently, take own initiatives, have good collaborative skills, be socially competent and be fluent in written and spoken English.
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
