Karolinska Institutet, NVS

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Neurogeriatrics and the research focus
The research at the division of Neurogeriatrics is focused on neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer’s disease and aims to translate findings from basic research into clinical practice. The position is affiliated to Bengt Winblad’s group that works with early phase drug discovery for AD and other related diseases. We have access to world class infrastructure in the form of several high-end core facilities situated at Karolinska Institutet.

Duties
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated scientist who is interested in working in a multi-disciplinary team at the forefront of translational Alzheimer's disease research. The position is mainly focused on research work related to development of small molecule ligands targeting protein-protein interaction drug targets in AD and related neurodegenerative disorders. In particular, we combine structural biology techniques such as macromolecular crystallography, biophysical and biochemical methods, and computer aided drug design to develop novel ligands as potential drug candidates for AD and related diseases.
The successful candidate will work independently, be part of a team to design drugs for important targets for treating AD and other dementias. The duties include in silico drug design using virtual screening, hit-to-lead development, lead optimization, biochemical assay development and compound screening. Prior experience with protein expression and purification in bacterial and human cell culture systems, protein-protein interaction analysis, and structure based drug design using x-ray crystallography is highly desirable.
The applicant is expected to develop an independent research line with a strong profile, writing scientific articles in leading journals, and present research results at scientific conferences and for the public. Furthermore, the person must apply for his / her own research grants and ensure financing for future research, as well as supervising graduate students in the research group. Also teaching at different levels and courses are included in the service. This employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.
The successful candidate should be ambitious, focused, hard-working, and possess good written and communication skills in English. Good interpersonal and social skills are also appreciated.

Eligibility requirements
Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position of assistant professor.
Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. Special grounds refer to illness or parental leave.
To qualify, the applicant must hold a PhD degree and post-doctoral experience in the field of medicinal chemistry, computational chemistry, structural biology, or biochemistry and a demonstrated ability to conduct original and innovative research. The ideal candidate will have the broad knowledge and research experience in structure based drug design and computer aided pre-clinical drug discovery field. Established record of high-quality scientific research and publications. Ability to work both independently and as a member of a collaborative, scientific team. The successful candidate will also be expected to have excellent verbal and written English skills and to write and apply for grants. We are interested in an individual that is creative, highly motivated and aim to establish world leading research with a clear technological focus incorporating potential translational value.

In order to be promoted to Senior Lecturer after an assessment by the Recruitment Committee, the applicant must meet the criteria below. The Assistant Professor can choose between two different promotion tracks; promotion to Senior Lecturer with focus on Research or promotion to Senior Lecturer with focus on Education and research.

Promotion of Assistant Professor to Senior Lecturer with focus on Research Assessment criteria

  1. Senior Lecturer expertise according to the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria for “Senior lecturer with focus on research”.
  2. Grants obtained as principal applicant in national or international competition that covers the applicant’s own salary for at least two years from the final date of employment as an Assistant Professor. Project funding obtained in national or international competition (i.e. excellence grants obtained from the Swedish Research Council, European Research Council (ERC), Wallenberg Foundation (WAF) or Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) that covers costs for salaries, rent, materials and other project-related expenses for the research for at least two years from the final date of employment as an Assistant Professor.
  3. First and/or senior author of a number of peer-reviewed scientific articles published in leading international scientific journals over a number of years after dissertation, with the emphasis on the qualification period as an Assistant Professor.
  4. An independent research line deemed by independent experts and departmental management to offer excellent future potential for both the individual researcher and the department in question.
  5. A documented good ability to lead the own research group – including staff responsibility and supervision of doctoral and/or postdoctoral students. Scientific expertise is emphasized when assessing applicants including successful scientific results in a good working climate, as well as documented collaborative abilities.
  6. All experience of undertaking assignments on behalf of the scientific community – such as board membership, internal assessment committees, departmental duties, organising courses and conferences and editorships – will be considered as merits.
