Karolinska Institutet,

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Engineered nanomaterials hold great promise in a range of biomedical and other applications. However, the biocompatibility of nano(bio)materials should be carefully evaluated. The Unit of Molecular Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine has a long track record in nanosafety research with emphasis on the in vitro assessment of nano(bio)material effects on the immune system. The work is currently conducted in the frame of EU-funded projects including the H2020 BIORIMA project, and a project funded by the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare (FORTE). We are now recruiting a post doc for a 1-year position in the FORTE project.

Duties

The successful applicant will work at the Unit of Molecular Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, in a highly international environment. The post doc will focus on the biological impact of nano(bio)materials especially nanocelluloses using in vitro model systems with emphasis on pulmonary and immune responses. The work is conducted in the frame of an interdisciplinary project funded by the funding agency FORTE.

Entry requirements

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a PhD degree in cell- or molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, or toxicology. Experience with the following techniques is needed: maintenance of primary cell cultures and cell lines, confocal and light microscopy, and standard cell- and molecular biology techniques including RT-PCR. We will also apply multiplex assays to monitor the expression and secretion of cytokines, other biomarkers, and we also apply omics-based approaches including transcriptomics followed by bioinformatics analyses of the data. Excellent communication skills (in English) and an ability to interact with other members of the laboratory, and with members of the consortium, are essential. Previous post doc experience and a strong publication record are preferred.

Application process
The application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. Curriculum vitae, including date of the PhD defense, previous academic position(s), current position, and list of laboratory skills, and a description of any previous participation in international, collaborative projects (max. 5 pages).
  2. List of publications, including original articles, review articles, and book chapters (do not any send reprints/PDFs).
  3. Statement of current/future research interests (max. 1 page).

4. At least two signed letters of recommendation from current or former supervisors (send scanned copies of letters).
