Karolinska Institutet, Department of NVS, Aging Research Center

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 70 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.

National E-infrastructure NEAR
Karolinska Institutet and five other Swedish Universities are building a National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR) with the ultimate scope to facilitate aging research in Sweden, foster international collaboration, and enhance the quality and impact of scientific research. Ultimately, by empowering aging research in Sweden, NEAR will contribute to identifying sustainable intervention strategies that will help to achieve better health and care for elderly people. NEAR consists of 15 databases derived from longitudinal cohort studies located in different geographical areas in Sweden.

Division
The position of database manager is announced by the Aging Research Center (ARC) where NEAR is located. The ARC is a center for interdisciplinary scientific research on health in aging that is grounded in collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University. The research group includes senior researchers, postdocs, doctoral students, and guest researchers, and it provides a vibrant and stimulating working atmosphere. There is now one permanent position available.

Duties
As a database manager working with us, you will play a central role in developing the NEAR systems for documenting, harmonizing, and managing complex data. The datasets participating in NEAR include more than 180,000 people over age 50. Participants are older adults who are assessed by direct interview and/or clinical examination (to date, this cohort has been followed for a minimum of 7 years to a maximum of 40 years). Data are linked with registers from Statistics Sweden (SCB) and the Swedish Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen). This position therefore requires close interaction with researchers, data providers, and local database administrators to get information in and out of the system for continued processing, analysis, and interpretation by statistical experts and researchers. You will work actively with the researchers and will be well integrated in the research process.
Your daily work will be a mix of system development, maintenance of existing systems, data documentation, and data handling and manipulation (edit/transform, load, extract).

Entry requirements
We are looking for you who are highly collegial and able to work well in a cross-disciplinary team as well as having the ability to work independently. The applicant must also possess good organizational skills, attention to detail, and analytical skills.
