Karolinska Institutet, Department of NVS, ARC

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 70 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.

Aging Research Center (ARC), an interdisciplinary research center with focus on older people and aging in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University, is now opening for a permanent full time position as Senior Researcher.

The successful candidate will be working in the Social Gerontology research group using cross-sectional and longitudinal data from interview studies and registers to study aging and older people’s health and living conditions. Currently, we are working with multiple scientific questions on topics such as:

  • how early living conditions and habits, both in childhood and adulthood, are associated with health later in life and multiple aspects of inequalities at group level.

These areas are often pursued addressing equality issues.

Duties
The Senior Researcher will participate in developing the research group’s work on social aspects of aging and the health and living conditions of older people. A special focus is on health inequalities, from both a life-course and a population perspective. Employment as Senior Researcher involves quantitative research in the areas described above, and responsibility for courses, teaching and supervising at Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University.

The applicant must have a doctoral degree and obtained a docentur or corresponding level of scientific competence; have an educational background in Social Sciences or Public Health; and extended competence in research on social inequalities in aging. Candidates should have documented experience of advanced statistical analyses of larger interview studies.
The candidate is an independent researcher with a good track record of publication in international journals within the field of Social Gerontology. The candidate is well integrated in the international research community in social gerontology.

The candidate we seek has good communication skills, and demonstrates good knowledge of both Swedish and English. Collaboration and participation in activities outside academia—such as writing reports and undertaking special (e.g., governmental) investigations—are meritorious.

The applicant has good pedagogical competence, experience of course planning and examination, and supervision of students.
