Karolinska Institutet, Department of NVS

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division
The division of Clinical Geriatric conducts research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. The research is multi- faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Some focus areas include lifestyle factors, prevention and treatment studies, imaging methods, and registry studies.

Research Group
Research assistant to be hired will be working in the research group of Professor Agneta Nordberg Translational Molecular Imaging which consists of a multi-disciplinary team at the forefront of translational Alzheimer´s disease (AD) research using cutting-edge technology with aims to develop new diagnostic biomarkers and new treatment strategies in AD.

Project
We are inviting applications for a 6-month position as research assistant in the area of characterization new PET tracers for detection of different pathological hallmarks including amyloid , tau, inflammation, synapse protein markers in Alzheimer´s disease and other dementia disorders.  The project will give you the opportunity to work under supervision, on projects aligned with the goals of the group. The project has a focus on performing binding assay on brain homogenate as well as autoradiography on large frozen brain sections using tritiated PET tracers and related to pathology, immunostaining  and other molecular biology properties.

Duties
Duties involve binding assay studies on brain homogenate, autoradiography on small and large frozen brain section and paraffin section, as well as statistical analyses of the results. The duties also involve participating and presenting progress updates in internal group meetings, as well as contributing to writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and presenting at international conferences when required.

Entry requirements
The candidate should have basic educational background in pharmacology or biomedicine, including coursework in chemistry, molecular biology neuroscience, and statistics. Previous experience in neurochemical laboratory work is expected. The candidate should be self- motivated, with a strong interest in research, and able to work both independently as well as being a good team player with excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal. Communication skills in Swedish are viewed positively. The candidate should be reliable, detail-oriented and collaborative, and with an ability to work without requiring extensive training or the need for close supervision.
