Karolinska Institutet, Department of Oncology-Pathology, Group Östman

At the Department of Oncology-Pathology basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer is carried out. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. About 30 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 110 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as for Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.

Research group
The Östman group has a longstanding track record in translational cancer research, with focus on paracrine interactions between malignant cells and cells of the tumor microenvironment. For further information about the Östman group please consult the Östman group web-site:

Research project and duties
We are seeking a outstanding candidate for a post-doctoral fellowship dedicated to explore cell-type specific redox signaling in cancer. The fellowship period is initially for one year, with possibility of extension for one more year.
The successful applicant will perform a postdoctoral project in the lab of Arne Östman and participate in collaborative efforts within an interdisciplinary consortium consisting of six laboratories including experts in redox-signaling, tumor immunology, drug development and proteomics.
This consortium performs detailed characterization of redox-signaling in malignant cells, immune cells, fibroblasts and cells of the vasculature. Ultimately the project aims at identifying red-ox-related cancer vulnerabilities that can be exploited as drug targets and biomarkers.
The successful applicant will perform detailed profiling of redox-markers in competitive well-annotated human tumor collections employing advanced methods for multiplexed in situ tissue analyses and associated tools for quantitative scoring of stained sections.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Candidates are eligible for this type of position only if he or she has not had any previous employments in Sweden between PhD and the start of the post-doc position.
A PhD in relevant research areas (cancer research involving IHC- or IF-based tissue analyses) is mandatory. A strong scientific track record and experience of big data analyses are extra qualifications. A high level of organizational and communicative skills, as well as an ability to independently perform and analyze experiments, is mandatory.

Type of scholarship
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and any committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  • Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labor unions or student organizations, parental leave or similar circumstances
  • Verification from the thesis defense committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defense is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
