The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) is a department with a strong focus on basic science. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology.
Division
Applications are invited for a post-doctoral fellowship in the research group of Kirsty Spalding, at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. The Spalding group works as part of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and the Integrated Cardio Metabolic Centre; a newly formed collaboration between Karolinska Institute and Astra Zeneca, providing a stimulating environment of diverse metabolic experts.
Duties
Using pioneering approaches such a single cell sequencing, radiocarbon dating and flow cytometry we investigate fundamental questions in human adipose biology. How adipocytes respond and contribute to metabolic disease is investigated at a single cell and whole organ level. Relevant topics include (i) the distribution and browning potential of white human adipocytes (ii) adipocyte heterogeneity within white adipose depots, as well as between adipocytes from different fat depots and (iii) the pathological contribution of adipocytes to metabolic disease.
The postdoctoral fellowship will provide an opportunity to learn a broad range of advanced methods and to participate in collaborations with academic and clinical partners.
Entry requirements
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To qualify, the applicant must have a PhD and expertise in the field of adipose biology. Knowledge of immunocytochemistry, confocal microscopy, primary tissue culture, flow cytometry or next generation sequencing (such RNA-seq) is an advantage. And an ability to work independently is vital, however the project is heavily integrated into other projects in the lab and thus an ability to work as part of a team is required. Good English oral and writing skills are a must.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Type of scholarship
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:
