Karolinska Institutet,

The Division
The Division of Chemistry 2 is a world renowned center for basic and translational research on bioactive lipids, especially the prostaglandins, leukotrienes and lipoxins. Our laboratories are located in the new research institute Biomedicum at Solna Campus, Karolinska Institutet (http://ki.se/en/staff/biomedicum). The Division offers an outstanding research environment involving molecular, cellular and translational approaches to solve our research tasks. Thus, we employ an array of biochemical and biophysical techniques, including state-of-the art mass spectrometry and x-ray crystallography along with cellular and animal models of disease. Our research field has generated several important drugs such as aspirin, coxibs, lukasts, and latanoprost for treatment of inflammation, pain, fever, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and glaucoma. Therefore, parts of our work have strong implications for drug development and are conducted in alliance with the pharmaceutical industry.

The project
We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with an interest in understanding how metabolic derangements influences the immune system contributes to development of disease. The project is focused on the role of proinflammatory lipid mediators in formation and progression of cardiovascular diseases, especially ischemic heart diseases and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). We aim to delineate the role of lipid mediators in these diseases and, in particular, analyze the therapeutic potential of agents that interfere with lipid mediator signaling.

Eligibility and requirements
Applications are invited from highly motivated individuals with a PhD in a relevant research field. Preferably, the applicant has experience in biochemical and cell biological techniques and a background in molecular medicine/biology and use of ex vivo or in vivo animal models. Analytical skills and ability to use HPLC and/or MS is a further advantage.

Good documentation skills as well as proficiency in both spoken and written English are required. The successful candidates should be able and willing to work in a team to pursue his/her research. Personal suitability is of great importance when evaluating the applicants.
