The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.
Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 70 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.
Division
The position of postdoc is announced by the division of Aging Research Center (ARC), a center for interdisciplinary research in aging which is a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University. ARC will be located at KI Campus Solna from May 2018 and on. The psychology sector at ARC conducts research within the field of memory, cognition and brain imaging. The research group includes senior researchers, postdocs, and doctoral students. We are now looking for a postdoctoral researcher for a two year position, starting in September 2018.
Duties
A large part of the scientific activities at ARC are based on the ongoing population-based Swedish National Study on Aging and Care-Kungsholmen (SNAC-K), which includes people 60+ years who are followed up at regular intervals. The protocol includes extensive assessment of social, medical, biological, and genetic factors as well as a comprehensive cognitive battery. Further information is available at http://www.snac-k.se/. The current post doc position will focus on predictors and trajectories of old-age cognitive decline. An important aspect will be to examine predictors of olfactory memory decline, taking advantage of the different olfaction tests repeatedly performed within SNAC-K. Over the course of the postdoctoral appointment, the candidate will plan, analyze, structure, and report on results from the current project.
Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD within the last 7 years. It is considered favorable if the candidate has knowledge within the fields of cognitive aging or olfactory cognition. Prior experience with longitudinal population-based databases and data modelling is also an advantage. Excellent collaborative, communication and writing skills are needed. Very good English skills in speaking and writing are an absolute requirement for the position. Independence and strong motivation are expected throughout the project.
