Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för laboratoriemedicin

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

Division
The Department of Laboratory of Medicine, located in Huddinge Campus, is one of the Karolinska Institutet’s largest departments including the Clinical Research Centre (CRC). 350 people are employed at the department, half of which are PhD-students. The Centre provides the facilities needed for cell- and molecular biology research and the possibility to perform research in vivo. The position is 3 months starting October 1st with the possibility for prolongation and placed in the research group of Caroline Palm Apergi. Palm Apergi’s research group works primarily on drug delivery in pediatric leukemia and investigating the role of the Plk family in healthy versus cancer cells.

Duties
The post-doctoral project will mostly focus on in vitro studies on cell lines and primary cells from pediatric leukemia patients and healthy donor samples. The first part of the work concentrates on investigating the Polo-like kinase (Plk) family expression in established cancer cell lines and patient samples as well as healthy donors. The second part of the project will compare small molecules and RNAi prodrugs targeting Plk1 and potential co-treatments with existing drugs.

Prospective candidates should be highly motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The applicants should have a solid background in molecular biology and experimental oncology. Practical lab experience is essential, especially in the following areas: flow cytometry, fluorescence spectroscopy, protein analysis (Western blot, ELISA and IP), cell culture work (knock-in and –out, establishing cell lines and cell assays), RNA expression analysis (rtPCR, qPCR). The applicant should have previous experience with delivery of oligonucleotide therapeutics.

The application is open for highly motivated candidates with previous experience of working with relevant molecular biology methods. Applicants with previous experience in these areas will be prioritized. In addition, applicants with prior experience in FlowJo analysis, RNAi, Plk1 and other cell cycle regulating proteins, are preferential. Excellent proficiency in both spoken and written English is highly desired. We are looking for an energetic and passionate person who fits in, and actively contributes to our team.
