Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

Karolinska Institutet, Department of Oncology-Pathology, Lehtiö research group

At the Department of Oncology-Pathology basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer is carried out. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. About 30 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 110 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as for Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.

Do you want to contribute by connecting the latest cancer proteome research to patient benefits?

Precision medicine refers to the tailoring of medical treatment to the individual characteristics of each patient. We are looking for a passionate research assistant interested in the concept of precision medicine using mass spectrometry-based proteomics. The work will span from generation to analysis of mass spectrometry-based proteomics data, with the aim to define and understand the biology behind drug-protein interactions, how they relate to clinical outcome, and how this information can be used to guide therapy decisions.

The position will be placed in the Cancer proteomics Mass spectrometry research group headed by Professor Janne Lehtiö at Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab). The Lehtiö group is a translational group aiming to improve cancer treatment using multi-omics tumor data analysis. The group members are from various disciplines working as a team to study genes and proteins in the context of biological networks, understand how tumor molecular changes impact the proteome and discover new disease biomarkers to be exploited therapeutically. Scientists and engineers in our group work closely together using a variety of technologies to generate novel knowledge about the biology of the disease and implement tools to support the clinical decision making in the oncology setting.

SciLifeLab is a national infrastructure and research center in technology driven life sciences and Karolinska Institutet is one of the four founding universities for SciLifeLab. We offer a very stimulating and diverse work in a team of very motivated co-workers with expertise in cutting-edge technology.

This is a fixed-term employment of approximately 9 months.

Your mission

We seek a highly motivated research assistant in proteomics, interested in addressing clinical research questions by using proteomics methodologies. The research assistant will generate mass spectrometry-based proteomics data of breast cancer cell lines to obtain biological understanding of drug-protein interactions and identifying biomarkers in clinical proteomics cohorts. The position requires solid expertise in proteomics, communication skills and willingness to work in a team environment. The current position offers great possibility for innovative research combining proteomics and other omics data, together with a dedicated group of scientists.

Your profile

To be eligible for the research assistant position, the person must have obtained a Master of Science or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a M.SC. Applicants who have not completed a M.Sc at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the research assistant.

Qualifications

  • M.Sc. in biology, chemistry, medicine, or another relevant field.
  • Documented experience and knowledge in sample preparation and generation of mass spectrometry-based proteomics data.
  • Working experience in omics data generation and analysis, integration, and visualization.
  • Ability to interpret omics data in a biological context
  • Knowledge of statistical methods
  • Understanding of cell- and molecular wet-lab experimental methods.
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Fluent in English language

Additional merits

  • Knowledge and working experience of breast cancer and hormone receptor positive breast cancer biology with focus on post-menopausal, aromatase treated patients.
  • Documented experience and knowledge in cell culture of breast cancer cell lines and cell lines representing breast tumor cell types.
  • Documented experience and knowledge in assays to identify drug-protein interactions, as Thermal protein profiling (TPP) or Proteome Integral Solubility Alteration (PISA).
  • Programming experience in: Python and/or R or equivalent.

Since the position involves close interaction with several researchers, emphasis is placed on personal skills such as:

  • Very good collaborative skills
  • Excellent communication skills and analytical skills
  • Curious and eager to solve biological questions.
