Are you looking to develop as a biostatistician, deepen your knowledge in pharmacoepidemiologic study designs, and expand your skills in both classic statistics and newer machine-learning methods? As a junior statistician, we can offer you a vibrant learning environment, with ample opportunity to learn from experienced researchers, statisticians, and domain experts while contributing to research that aims to improve the life of people living with chronic inflammatory diseases.
We are looking for a talented junior statistician who is able to independently, but under supervision, contribute to the statistical programming and modelling in our team of researchers focused on the methodologic aspects of clinical epidemiology. The work will focus on long-term clinical outcomes in persons with immune-mediated inflammatory disease in rheumatology and neurology (primarily rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis) using high quality prospectively-collected data on treatment outcomes from national registries and medical records. Our goal is to evaluate the risk of disease worsening and treatment-related adverse events in relation to patient characteristics, including pre-disease (prodromal) markers, comorbidity, imaging, biomarkers, and disease-modifying therapy exposure, integrating traditional clinical epidemiology with advanced machine learning techniques.
You are an early career statistician, likely fresh out of a master’s program, who is looking for a place to grow. You have a talent for quickly mastering new statistical techniques, jumping between programming languages, and dealing with a barrage of medical concepts that at first will make little sense to you. You are curious enough to think that this even sounds like fun!
More formally, you are required to have previous knowledge corresponding to a Master’s degree in applied or theoretical statistics. Experience with programming in Python, R, Stata and/or SAS are strong merits, as is experience working with large health-related datasets like the Scandinavian national registers. Although not a requirement, familiarity with the Swedish healthcare system and the fields of rheumatology and neurology are also merits. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are expected.
A creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and interests. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote a better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is also a state university, which entitles you to several good benefits through our collective agreement. And you get to practice freely in our modern wellness facilities, where trained staff are on site.
The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of ten divisions and each division consists of several research groups. The position is located within the team of Thomas Frisell within the Clinical Epidemiology Division (KEP). At KEP, epidemiologists and biostatisticians work closely with clinician scientists and other domain experts to answer clinically important research questions. In total, we are approximately 150 researchers at the Division, which also arranges a PhD program for clinicians, providing teaching opportunities at the post-graduate level.
In the Chronic Inflammatory Disease Research Group, there are approximately 50 people (Doctoral students, Postdoctoral Fellows, Professors, Senior Researchers) with different backgrounds but common research interests; studying chronic inflammatory diseases using Swedish national registers and clinical data. We have a strong interest in cutting edge methodologies, a wide network of research and clinical collaborators, and extensive experience working with real-world data.
