Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of 7 divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine to promote human health in short and long term. The department has close collaboration with Karolinska Hospital and is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical, and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

The research group of Dr. Ping Chen at the Division of Clinical Chemistry is looking for a postdoctoral fellow interested in artificial intelligence and advanced omics data analysis. We focus on data-driven research to understand the disease pathogenesis and devise better diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for human metabolic disease. In close collaboration with multidisciplinary researchers, we integrate biobanks, longitudinal clinical data, omics technologies as well as novel computational and experimental approaches in our research. A two-year postdoc position is immediately available from the Chen lab.

Division

The Division of Clinical Chemistry is carrying out research to elucidate the molecular basis of cardiometabolic disease integrating basic science, clinical medicine, and translational approaches.

Duties

During the development of obesity and insulin resistance, ectopic lipid accumulation occurs in various organs. In the liver, such condition is called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which can progress to more severe stages, such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and/or hepatocellular carcinoma. Liver fibrosis is the most important predictor of prognosis in NAFLD patients. In this project, we will focus on NAFLD and develop an innovative non-invasive machine learning model to monitor the real-time disease progression and future risks of NAFLD patients. The tools developed here will allow patient subgroup stratification at a high resolution and further investigate how the immune system is functional in high-risk NAFLD patients during their longitudinal disease progression.

Entry requirements

To quality, the applicants are required to have a PhD in the field of computational biology and have extensive knowledge of biomedical sciences. Specifically, experience with machine learning and analysis of human omics data are of advantage. The person should exhibit a high degree of independence but on the other hand also value a collaborative approach to science and enjoy working in a team. Motivation, the ability to work with people of different disciplines, executive capacity and good communication skills in English are important. A strong publication track record and good manuscript writing skills are desirable. Experience with biopsy specimen collection, flow cytometry, cell culture, and library construction for single-cell sequencing are a benefit but not essential.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: The position is located within the Department of Laboratory Medicine, KI Campus Flemingsberg within the research group of Dr. Ping Chen at the Division of Clinical Chemistry.

Type of scholarship

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
