An exciting opportunity to be part of the Karolinska Institutet biomedical research at the Department of Medicine Solna. Division

The research group of Dr. Magdalena Paolino, included in the Department of Medicine, Solna, at the Bioclinicum building of the Karolinska University Hospital. With our research, we aim to go all the way from animal genetics to therapy, and we strive to have important implications for human health and disease treatment. The Bioclinicum provides an open and international research environment, top-notch in-house infrastructure, and access to daily seminars and lectures by world-leading scientist. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden.

Duties

We have vast experience in experimentally unraveling how diverse genes regulate the functions and responses of immune cells (Nature 2021, Nature 2018, Nature 2014, J. Immunol 2011). We are now looking for up to two highly motivated postdoctoral candidates to explore the function and mechanism of previously uncharacterized genes in the regulation of selected immune cells. The projects aim to from all the way from genes, to cells, and finally, to the whole organism. Thus, the postdoc is expected to apply molecular and cellular biology techniques to characterize in depth the gene function at the cellular levels in immune cells and then use animal models to reveal the impact of these findings in the pathophysiology of diseases in vivo, specifically in metabolic diseases and cancer. For these tasks, he/she will combine mouse genetics and in vivo disease models with a wide range of state-of-the-art approaches, including cell biology, molecular and immunological experimental methods, such as flow cytometry analysis, viral-based gene editing via CRISPR/Cas9 and shRNA, histology and microscopy, next generation sequencing and cell culture models. The applicant is expected to work in a diligent way to take the lead and responsibility in generating properly controlled scientific data of high quality.

Entry requirements

The applicant is eligible to apply if he or she has obtained a PhD in Cancer biology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related fields. Proven competence in functional in vivo studies using animal models in the fields of immunology is required. Candidates must demonstrate experience working with immune cells in vivo and in vitro, including flow cytometry. Expertise in ubiquitination research and/or working with neutrophils or T regulatory cells are advantageous for this position.  

The ideal candidate should be creative and goal-oriented, with a scientific drive and proven scientific track record, and thrive in an interdisciplinary and international environment. The candidates should be able to work independently and take a strong lead in managing the project. Good interpersonal and communication skills in English, spoken and written, are required. Personal suitability for the group will also be a strong selection criterion.

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location

The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups. The position is located within the research group  of Dr. Magdalena Paolino, funded by the Karolinska Institutet, the Swedish Research Council, the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation and Cancerfonden.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
