At the Department of Oncology-Pathology we perform basic, translational and clinical research as well as educational activities related to cancer. The department is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.

Your mission

This adjunct lecturer position is focused on education, research and leadership.

Regarding education: The appointed candidate will be expected to take on responsibility for education in the Department of Oncology-Pathology (as grundutbildningsansvarig, GUA), to run and develop the department’s 10-week, 15 credit Tumour Biology Biomedicine course and to hold single lectures on PhD and Bachelor degree courses on the subject matter of cancer bioinformatics and tumour biology.

Regarding research: The appointed candidate will be expected to drive a translational cancer bioinformatics-centric research program through their own project funding obtained in national competition, publishing in leading international research journals, with the ultimate goal of integrating ‘omics techniques, technologies and analysis methodology into routine clinical practice.

Regarding leadership: Finally, the appointed candidate will be expected to be actively involved in the supervision of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in research projects as well as to participate in the regular academic activities at Karolinska Institutet, such as organizing courses, evaluation of dissertations, evaluation of research funding applications, and sitting on university boards and committees.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a adjunct lecturer, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the candidate must have demonstrated teaching and research expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

A PhD, primarily in Biology/ Cancer Bioinformatics or alternatively in another relevant field is a requirement.In addition, the level of knowledge is expected to be in line with the level of knowledge required for associate professor at KI.

Regarding education: The candidate shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. In addition, the candidate must have experience of course leadership and development at a Bachelor level or higher.

Regarding research: The candidate must be able to demonstrate high quality research activity where they have made a significant contribution, documented through first and last authorships in the cancer ‘omics and tumour biology field. Extensive experience with ‘omics data analysis in collaborative research projects or clinical trials with biologists, clinical researchers and broader multi-disciplinary teams is essential. Long-term research funding obtained through national competition as lead applicant is also required as this will fund the remaining 75% of this adjunct position.

Regarding leadership: The candidate must have successfully supervised doctoral students to completion of PhD as main supervisor and show active participation in university boards and committees.

The candidate must be fluent in spoken English and Swedish.

Bases of assessment

This adjunct lecturer position is education, research and leadership focused. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: educational expertise (3), research expertise (3) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

We are seeking a candidate with an outstanding education, research and leadership track record in the subject areas of cancer bioinformatics and tumour biology. In the first instance, candidates will be assessed in relation to the eligibility criteria defined above and secondary to this in terms of the meriting criteria outlined below. The following criteria count as merits in the assessment process but are not strict requirements, note that they refer to the fields of cancer bioinformatics and tumour biology:

Regarding education merits: responsibility for courses (“kursansvarig”) of greater length (>2 weeks) where the applicant has also acted as examiner; experience of education at breath (bachelor, PhD, post-doc levels) and expertise (lectures, tutorials, seminars); teaching for healthcare practitioners; experience of digital platforms for the teaching and examination of students; additional higher education training beyond 10 weeks; experience in taking responsibility for the development of new courses

Regarding research merits: multiple publications with a cancer ‘omics data focus as first and last author in leading international research journals; publications in clinical journals are also meriting; PhD thesis committee and/ or opponent appointments; presentations at national and international conferences; journal and grant reviewer appointments; expert research advisory roles or appointments; national and international collaborative research network in the fields of cancer ‘omics and tumour biology

Regarding leadership merits: participation in leadership courses; sitting as chair or executive board member on cancer specific committees or consortia; sitting on university committees or planning groups outside of research expertise; taking an active role in conference organization and planning

Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently employed at the Department of Oncology-Pathology. We have 37 research groups working mainly within research related to cancer and we have around 110 PhD students. The department annually receives around 110 million SEK in governmental and non-governmental funding.
