At the Department of Oncology-Pathology basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer is carried out. This is reflected by the type of work done in the Kiessling group, as it focuses on basic and translational aspects of cancer immunotherapy research, while it also runs investigator initiated clinical trials on cancer patients.

Your mission

The position is placed in the research group of Rolf Kiessling at department of Oncology-Pathology, BioClinicum, Karolinska Institutet. This is primarily a research position, as specified under “Basis of assessment” below, but could also involve training and supervision of Master students and PhD students.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. Special grounds refer to illness or parental leave.

Bases of assessment

We are looking for a highly driven researcher with a broad immunological background in cancer immunotherapy. Ideally the applicant should have experience in both mouse experimental basic immunology and in human clinical immunotherapy work. Knowledge of establishing mouse tumor models, bone marrow chimeras, breeding and back-crossing of mouse strains will be an advantage. Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge in handling human clinical material, experience in PBMC purification and cell isolation (T cells, NK cells, monocytes), analyzing clinical samples with multi-color Flow cytometry, and with functional in vitro assays such as: intra cellular staining’s (CD107a/cytokines), Elisa, Chromium release assay, T cell activation/peptide screening. The position will involve production of cell therapy products in a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) laboratory, why preference will be given to an applicant certified to perform and organize GMP work and with experience in generation of T cell product for treatment of cancer patients. Proficiency in written and spoken English i required. Some knowledge in Swedish language is an advantage but not an absolute requirement. Previous experience of supervision of Master students and PhD students is also an advantage.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
