Our research profile is translational where we are utilizing both preclinical and clinical investigations in order to increase our understanding of why and how kidney failure develops and proceeds, and how we can battle cardiovascular complications in the uremic environment. We strongly believe that integrating sex and gender analysis into research processes may lead to discoveries that will improve health for everybody.

Your mission

The overarching aim for you will be to integrate sex and gender dimensions in applied health research, and to evaluate their impact on clinical cost-sensitive outcomes and patient reported outcomes related to quality of life, primarily in chronic kidney disease, and then in other diseases with the team of international researchers. In addition, the postdoc researcher will be encouraged to participate in our translational research focusing on cardiovascular function under uremic environment and in women with adverse pregnancy outcomes.

The project will be based on a five-country transatlantic network (Associated Prof. K. Kublickiene PI at Swedish site, Karolinska Institutet) involving more than 30 investigators.

The applicant will be primarily based at Karolinska Institutet, however short visits to other countries will be included, as the consortium will benchmark innovative solutions to measure gender in retrospective cohorts. Based on consensus, the consortium will develop a framework to identify gender-related factors, as well as cost-sensitive and patient reported outcomes and measure this in international cohorts of patients affected by cardiovascular, chronic kidney and neurological diseases and metabolic syndrome.

We also expect that you will be a part of our journey to construct innovative ways to measure the contribution of sex and gender-related factors towards personalised approaches to chronic disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The candidate will develop a research program in novel analytics for gender dimension measurement as a component of increased precision in health care delivery and outcomes, as well as a primary driver to further elaborate translational research towards understanding cardiovascular complications under uremic environment and for application of pharmacological compounds to ameliorate condition of early vascular ageing.

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and efficient researcher with a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. public health, biostatistics, medicine, cardiovascular health) with experience in epidemiology, as well in cardiovascular field using ex-vivo and in vivo techniques to assess vascular function. Candidates with previous experience in epidemiology of renal disorders and/or application of sex and gender analysis in preclinical research are especially encouraged to apply.

An ambitious, pro-active and problem-solving attitude, as well as a solid theoretical background and good practical experience are highly valued. Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English are a must. Swedish language knowledge is also highly appreciated.  Finally, the ability to perform data analysis independently and to carry out literature searches and reviews are essential.

Specifically, we would value:

1. Expertise in register-based research using national registers;
2. Experience in using statistical software and programming packages (e.g. Stata, SAS, Python, R)
3. Experience in using experimental techniques to assess vascular function both in human studies and/or animal experiments and/or experimental organ, cell models.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
