Karolinska Institutet

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. Division
The overall research mission of the unit for molecular pain research led by Prof. Camilla Svensson is to advance our understanding of the mechanisms that drive chronic pain states, in particular persistent pain in rheumatic diseases. We are exploring how immune cells, bone cells and associated factors affect the nervous system and contribute to induction and maintenance of pain signal transduction. Intracellular signaling pathways that are activated or deactivated in this process are being dissected and studied in relation to persistent pain. We use a number of behavioral, immunohistochemical, electrophysiological and molecular biological techniques to dissect pain pathways in vivo and in cell culture systems, with the aim to pin-point novel targets for the development of new pain therapeutics.

Duties
The successful applicant will use mouse models of arthritis and fibromyalgia for assessment of nociception and changes in other behavioral parameters using a number of different behavioral outcome measures. The work will be centered on the role of autoantibodies and associated factors in induction and maintenance of pain and the work will have a strong focus on in vivo behavioral assays, genetically modified mice and pharmacological and molecular biological approaches for intervention studies. The work will involve antibody purification and protein analysis such as immunohistochemistry and ELISA of tissues samples. The duties include project planning, management and coordination and supervision of master and PhD student. Close interaction with rheumatology and pain pre-clinical and clinical researchers as well as the industry makes this an exciting multidisciplinary translational project.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Senior Researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after defending his or her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Assistant professor.

In addition to this, displayed pedagogical proficiency or other related skills that are relevant to the appointment's duties may be required to be eligible.

Bases of assessment
We stress research expertise when assessing applicants.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
