Division
The research at the Division of Molecular Metabolism aims at understanding the regulation of mitochondrial function and the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in disease. The laboratory offers an outstanding research environment and a close interaction between basic science and clinical science and diagnostics at the Centre for Inherited Metabolic Diseases (CMMS) at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. The Division of Molecular Metabolism also closely interacts with the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing - Karolinska Institutet Laboratory (MPI-KI laboratory). The current research encompasses biochemical and genetic studies of patients with inherited metabolic diseases, as well as basic scientific approaches to understand mechanisms and regulation of mtDNA gene expression. Additionally, the division is interested in metabolic changes caused by mitochondrial dysfunctions and their molecular consequences. Both patient material (tissues and cells) and genetically modified model organisms (fruit flies and mice) are used in these studies. The overall aim of the division is to combine these different areas of research to get insights into disease pathophysiology and to develop novel treatment strategies.

Duties
We use a range of model systems, including genetically modified fruit flies and mice, as well as patient-derived and reprogrammed cell lines, to broaden our understanding of the molecular interactions that affect mitochondrial metabolism, both in health and disease. Our research aims at identifying the molecular consequences of metabolic derangements, caused by inborn errors of metabolism, specifically those involving mitochondrial dysfunctions. Additionally, we have a special focus on identifying and understanding posttranscriptional and posttranslational modifications within mitochondria and how they regulate mitochondrial and cellular function.

Entry requirements
Applications are invited from individuals of the highest calibre with a Ph.D. degree. A strong background in molecular biology and/or mouse or Drosophila genetics is required. Knowledge in mitochondrial biology is preferred, but not essential. A working knowledge of the English language is required. Personal suitability is of great importance when evaluating the applicants.
A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.
