Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Solna, Cardiology division

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Division
The Division of Cardiology conducts clinical and basic research on cardiovascular diseases (e.g. heart failure, coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension)

Duties
The researcher will perform experimental studies in animal models, cells and human tissues in the context of heart disease and associated co-morbid clinical conditions (e.g. heart failure, cardiomyopathies, ischemic heart disease, diabetes and inflammation). He/she will work with in vivo and ex vivo animal models (e.g. echocardiography, Langendorff heart preparations, blood pressure measurements, ECG, treatment of animal using established and experimental compounds). Moreover, he/she will work with single cell imaging techniques (e.g. fluorescence and confocal microscopy), molecular biology and biochemistry (e.g. PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry and enzyme activity assays). The work is performed in a team with other researchers at KI (Biomedicum research facility) and outside collaborators that is led by PIs at the department of medicine Solna and dept physiology and pharmacology. He/she is expected to teach methods to students and collaborators in a team oriented spirit.

Entry requirements
The Applicant must have a PhD degree in experimental medical science or similar. He/she should have extensive previous research experience on experimental cardiovascular studies and good knowledge in study design. He/she should have extensive experience of work with in vivo and ex vivo experimental animal models and common cell and molecular biology techniques. Knowledge in cell imaging techniques is a requirement. The Applicant must also be able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. The Candidate must be fluent in English and have writing skills.

A person is eligible to be appointed Senior Researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after publicly defending his or her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Assistant professor.
