Karolinska Institutet, The Institute of Environmental Medicine

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

The Unit
The research at the Unit of Systems toxicology at IMM covers basic mechanistic research in cell and in animal models as well as analysis of epidemiological data and mathematical modelling of how different environmental exposures, including environmental and endogenous microbes and chemicals, affect human wellbeing. With a focus on gene-environment interactions at epithelial barriers, we are primarily interested in understanding how exposures to external agents impacts on barrier function, immunity and systemic immune responses. Our aim is to integrate multi-omics approaches to uncover the mechanisms behind the factors linking environmental exposures with immune system activation or immune tolerance.

Duties
The research focus of the advertised post will be on environmental exposures, including microbial and chemical exposures, and the search for biomarkers using omics approaches for the development of new diagnostic methods, future therapies and preventive strategies. The research will include investigation of immune responses in vivo (humans and animal models) and in simple and advanced cell systems, for in vivo and in vitro correlations. The task also includes course responsibility and teaching in immunology and toxicology, especially in the master’s program for toxicology, as well as supervision of postgraduate and PhD students. In addition, the task includes IMM’s translational assignment which is risk assessment.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Senior Researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after publicly defending his or her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Assistant professor. The candidate should also have experience from teaching and course responsibility.

Qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with experience in environmental exposures and epidemiological data, as well as in depth experience in cell and animal models within microbiome and allergy research. Excellent skills in written and spoken English and Swedish, as well as an ability to interact socially and scientifically with other researchers and students, are essential.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.

At Karolinska Institutet a 6-month trial period is required for all permanent appointments.
