Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, Kasper (MKA)

The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Division
The research group of Maria Kasper at the Dept. of Biosciences and Nutrition is investigating the dynamics of stem and progenitor cells in skin – during normal physiology, wound healing and cancer initiation – using the murine skin as a model system (see lab references: Jaks et al. Nat Genet 2008, Snippert et al. Science 2010, Kasper et al, PNAS 2011, Fullgrabe et al. Stem Cell Reports 2015, Joost et al, Cell Syst 2016). To investigate the dynamics of stem/progenitor cells and their progeny in these processes we use a wide range of methods like lineage tracing and tumor mouse models, single-cell transcriptomics, FACS and advanced imaging techniques.

We are a young and dynamic research team with a well-established collaborative network. The group is located within an environment hosting a broad repertoire of technology including good access to the high-end core facilities for single-cell sequencing, mouse work, FACS sorting, and imaging (confocal, two-photon, super-resolution).

Duties
The employee will work in our multidisciplinary team of researchers including both wet-lab scientists and bioinformaticians. The main task of the successful candidate is to pursue research and research supervision in the field cutaneous wound healing and hair regeneration using animal models, high-level confocal microscopy, and single-cell RNA-sequencing. The employee is expected to analyze, discuss, interpret and integrate these data and write high-quality scientific publications. Other duties include managing mouse strain maintenance, and contributing to the supervision of postdoctoral colleagues, PhD, Master and Internship students in the group.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence.

Qualifications
We are seeking one highly motivated researcher with a good team spirit and deep curiosity for science. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in molecular biology, biomedicine or equivalent, with a keen interest in skin biology including cutaneous wound healing processes and skin cancer development and proficiency with mouse work.

Experience in working with murine skin as a model system (incl. single-cell skin dissociation, skin biopsies, and mouse surgery), molecular biology techniques, single-molecule FISH, advanced confocal microscopy, and interpreting RNA-sequencing data are a strong plus. Also a good ability to communicate in English (written and verbal) is required. A proven track record in skin biology demonstrating high-quality research in international journals is also a merit.

Bases of assessment
We stress research expertise (skills and knowledge) when assessing applicants. The applicants experience to work within skin biology and using mouse models will be assessed based on curriculum vitae and track record. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:

  • Curriculum vitae (max 3 pages)
  • Complete list of publications
  • Summary of current work (0.5-1 page)
  • Contact details of two reference persons
  • Ph.D. degree certificate

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.

At Karolinska Institutet a 6-month trial period is required for all permanent appointments.
