Karolinska Institutet, Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, Riedel (CRI)

The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Division
The Integrated Cardio Metabolic Centre (ICMC) has recently been established as a research collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to addresses a variety of strategic research areas. Out of these, our lab focuses on the study of age-related diseases. The ICMC creates a unique interface between academia and industry, provides outstanding infrastructure, and aims to develop innovative therapeutic approaches.

Research group and project
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Christian Riedel. The research group studies the molecular mechanisms that regulate aging and age-related disease, frequently using the model system C. elegans. Focus of the fully funded position is to investigate aging-regulatory endocrine signaling pathways and their downstream transcription regulatory events, with a particular interest in insulin/IGF signaling and mechanisms of its modulation.

Our research combines biochemistry (e.g. proteomics), cytology, and high-throughput sequencing techniques (e.g. ChIP-Seq and mRNA-Seq) with high-throughput genetic screening approaches (RNAi), to understand the regulation of aging at molecular and mechanistic resolution.

The position is for 1 year with the possibility of further extension.

Duties
The postdoctoral fellow is expected to play a leading role in experimental design, experimentation, analysis, and the presentation/publication of results.

Qualifications
The applicant should have a PhD degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or Molecular Genetics. He/she is expected to be a talented, highly motivated, and hardworking researcher, with a good understanding of biochemical, molecular biology, and genetic techniques. Extensive background in transcriptional regulation and aging biology is required. Likewise, we expect the applicant to have prior experience with the use of C. elegans and the genetic, RNAi screening, micro-injection, as well as lifespan analysis methods used in this system. Strong emphasis will be placed on the applicants’ scientific track-record, and his/her ability to work in a team.

The applicant should have good communication skills and be proficient in spoken and written English.

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. A cover letter or letter of motivation (no more than half a page).
  2. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work.
  3. A complete list of publications
  4. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
